Keyhole neurosurgery unlocked

A new class of robotics and AI for minimally invasive neurosurgery
Green arrowGreen arrow
ABOUT

Keyhole neurosurgery

To remove tumors and abnormalities deep within the brain and spine, surgeons have introduced minimally invasive approaches which are less risky than open neurosurgery with decreased morbidity, faster patient recovery, and no visible scarring. However, operating in these tight spaces through narrow corridors is challenging due to the lack of dexterity. As a result, these advanced neurosurgical methods are limited to specialized centers in selected geographical regions, reducing patient access, and straining hospitals with referral and readmission costs.

Next generation handheld robotics

Panda Surgical is developing a next-generation handheld robotics platform that offers neurosurgeons enhanced dexterity and control in confined spaces, enabling more surgeons to perform complex minimally invasive procedures. Our robotic instruments incorporate exchangeable wristed surgical tools accompanied by AI-powered software which aims to assist during the surgical workflow. This robotic capability increases the neurosurgeon’s dexterity and decision-making, allowing them to reach previously unattainable areas and perform delicate maneuvers safely and precisely.

PhD Surgical Robotics

Manios Dimitrakakis obtained a combined BA and MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Patras, with his Master's thesis subject being the development of a novel robotic manipulator for thoracic surgery. He then went on to do a PhD in University College London Computer Science on the development of handheld robotic devices for minimally invasive neurosurgery. To translate the technology he developed during his PhD into the operating theatre, he co-founded Panda Surgical, a UCL spinout, alongside his PhD supervisors UCL CS Prof. Danail Stoyanov and UCLH neurosurgeon Mr. Hani Marcus. Since May 2023, he has been leading the effort at Panda Surgical as the company's CEO.
